Join us for an exciting month long programme of events, workshops, pop-up markets, park events, exhibitions, walks, talks and plenty more, being delivered as part of the first ever Chingford Mount Black History Month programme.
The programme has been developed by the Waltham Forest Regeneration team in partnership with community leaders and local organisations.

WEDNESDAY 1 OCTOBER
CHINGFORD MOUNT BLACK HISTORY MONTH: LAUNCH EVENT
Join us for the launch of the first ever Chingford Mount Black History Month programme. Find out about all the exciting activities and events taking place over the next month, meet key people, pick up a programme, enjoy performances and indulge in some light refreshments.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH JOINT ART EXHIBITION: LAUNCH EVENT
Join four talented young artists for the launch of this unique Black History Month art exhibition.
Soloman Winter, Rebecca Dyer, Hannah Grant and Reese Campbell will share their artistic gifts with the community and will display their work at the 228 Chingford Mount Road Pop-Up shop (E4 8JL) for the duration of October.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH MARKET PLACE
Baitaari Design, founded by Equatorial Guinea–born creative Anastasia Bonkanka Baita, brings the beauty of African heritage to the world through unique, handmade textile accessories. Each piece blends bold cultural traditions with modern style, celebrating craftsmanship and individuality. With every creation, Baitaari Design inspires, empowers, and shares the spirit of Africa with the world.
Sharon Alexxanderr-caine of touchheartjewellery who will be presenting her unique handmade jewellery. All items are one off statement pieces, using silver and gold copper plated wire, with gemstones incorporated into many of the jewellery items.

Emmanuel Freeman of Silenf Designs will bring together unique clothing designs, with options for you to customise items to make your item truly bespoke and one of a kind, plus Melanin wear and Ankara fans.

Patterns of Africa: Textile Collage Workshops
These free mixed-media workshops invites participants to explore the vibrancy of African textiles through the art of collage. Using scraps of authentic fabrics, participants piece together colours, textures, and patterns to recreate imagery and scenes inspired by African life, traditions, and landscapes. Each collage becomes a tapestry of stories, blending creativity with cultural expression while celebrating the artistry of African fabric design.

Tangled Twists: Exploring Africa through Pattern and Flow
This workshop introduces participants to two mindful drawing approaches that combine structured, repeating patterns with free-flowing, organic lines. After learning the basics of these techniques, participants will apply them to imagery inspired by the rhythms, symbols, and spirit of African culture. The process blends relaxation with creativity, turning each stroke into both a meditative practice and an artistic celebration.

BHM CHARITY 5K RUN & 2K WALK CHALLENGE
Lace up your trainers and join MB Community CIC for this Black History Month 2K/5K Challenge at Memorial Park in Chingford. This inclusive run/walk event is a celebration of health, heritage, and community, encouraging participants of all fitness levels to get active while recognising Black contributions to sport, culture, and social change.
Open to all individuals, families, and community groups.

2nd BLACK HISTORY MONTH MARKET PLACE
Sharon Paul creates bespoke candles for all occasions with unique scented blends and bespoke candle designs.
By Kala X – the place for lovers of African Print material.
Kala's brand was created to bring a touch of colour to everyday items. A desire to introduce vibrant African prints to a wider audience with a focus on eye-catching decor for both the office and home, as well quality clothing and accessories.
Sakara Campbell runs a small fashion boutique making customised outfits with every item uniquely designed, including African print designs, fashionable dresses and co ord sets.
Artist Marsha Nelson makes greetings cards, home decor, artwork, mixed media and upcycle items.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH COMMUNITY TREASURE HUNT

Join MB Community CIC for an intergenerational Black History Month Community Treasure Hunt!
Designed to educate, celebrate, and bring people together, this fun and engaging challenge will see teams working together to follow clues, solve puzzles, and learn about Black British history and culture. Prizes, music, and refreshments will be provided — all ages welcome!

JEWELLERY WORKSHOPS WITH NZINGHA JEWELLERY
Join artist and creator Beverly Quintal of Nzingha Jewellery for a round of unique jewellery making workshops.
Attendees will create unique jewellery with sustainable cowrie shells , recycled exotic wood beads, resin , glass sea beads and crystal glass beads that have been handpicked by Beverley during her many travels across the globe .
You'll learn about the history and culture of the beads and how they are still being used around the globe in many different countries and cultures.
What to expect:
• Learn how to make a pair of earrings and a matching bracelet, using an ancient sliding knot technique
• Learn how to use jewellery making tools (Beverly will be giving some trade secrets away)
• Meet new likeminded people and have fun sharing their skills whilst helping one another along the way
• Use simple basic maths skills such as counting beaded and using a jewellery design board
• All tools and materials will be provided for
• Workshops last for 1.5hrs
• Times: 10am - 11.30am, 12pm-1.30pm, 2pm-3.30pm, 4pm-5.30pm

Celebrate Black History Month with food, music, art, craft, stalls and much more in this celebratory day for the whole community.

Celebratory service dedicated to Black History Month
10am St Edmund's Church Larkswood Road (E4 9DS).
All are welcome to join St Edmunds Church for a service celebrating Black History Month. This will be a service of Holy Communion with Revd Hilda Gilberts giving the sermon. Opportunity will be taken to draw together this year's Black History Month theme of power and pride, and pray together for all those continuing to work for justice and equity.

HOUSE JANKONU LANTERN WORKSHOP & TWILIGHT PARADE
Come and create your own free House Jankonu lantern and be part of a celebration of Waltham Forest’s rich mix of cultural traditions. As summer turns to autumn, we gather to honour our ancestors and the many stories that connect us.
Join our free workshops with master lantern-maker Anna van der Poorten, then take part in the Chingford Mount Black History Month Twilight Màs Walk – a vibrant procession led by the Jankonu drummers, with A.Xodus, Leaders Community, and more.

WEDNESDAY 29 OCTOBER
CHILDREN AND FAMILIES ALKEBULAN TILE WORKSHOPS
Exploring traditional African textiles through printmaking, collage, and slow stitching with Baitaari Design.
Duration: 3 hours
Each session is divided into two engaging parts:
Part 1 – Printmaking Inspired by African Textiles
Attendees will learn about the rich visual language of traditional African textiles and use gel plates to print fabric-inspired motifs onto paper. They will explore pattern, repetition, and cultural meaning as they build a beautiful collection of prints.
Part 2 – Momigami, Collage & Slow Stitching
In the second half, the attendees will be introduced to momigami, a Japanese technique that softens and distresses paper to give it a fabric-like feel. They will then use their printed papers to create a textured collage, adding slow stitching to embellish their piece.
The finished artwork will be put in a picture mount, ready to frame and hang.
Morning session: 10:30 – 12:30 (for children aged 6–16)
Afternoon session: 15:00 – 18:00 (for participants 16+)
