Ms B at 228 is a pop up exhibition & book launch by Sharon Young. The exhibition forms part of her work with She Speaks Up Community Interest Company which works locally to help support women tell their story through art.
It coincides with the publication of her book Ms. B; The Hysterical Episodes and is the culmination of her PhD research at the Royal College of Art.
She Speaks Up works in partnership with artists, local community groups, workshops, bookshops, anyone with a creative bone in their body to help facilitate pop up art exhibitions and workshops that serve the community. We hope to help everyone, but particularly women, to find ways to tell stories that might not have had a chance to be told.
Ms B is a fictional character inspired by Madame Bovary. Looking at historical figures of the ‘hysteric’ in psychoanalysis and literary fiction Sharon wonders what relevance this term might have today. Historically the ‘hysteric’ has often been dismissed by society. In a time when women apparently have more freedom, the right to vote and supposed equal pay why do so many women today feel that they don’t have a voice? This exhibition invites anyone who resonates with this idea of the hysteric to come and join in the conversation.
Due to unforeseen circumstances the exhibit has closed a week early. Sharon and The She Speaks Up CIC will be back in 228 in November.
